In many cultures, the bat, this small winged mammal that lives in the dark, symbolises luck, longevity and happiness. The bat in this paperweight has been crafted using the blowtorch technique. The body is made from enamelled amber crystal, while the wings are woven in black crystal. The precision of the detail gives a realistic appearance and an impression of flight. The bat is flying over a nebula at night. The enamel background is tinted by the use of gas, a technique employed by the paperweight workshop for the first time. The paperweight is encased in clear crystal, then covered in a triple overlay in flannel grey, white enamel and red crystal. A pontil cut allows the flying bat to be observed from several different angles.

Saint Louis is the only crystal factory in the world still able to make paperweights. They have been reinventing the art form every year since 1953 with creations born from the imagination and dexterity of the paperweight atelier’s master glassmakers made for collectors and new enthusiasts alike. Within the Atelier, two glassmakers are Meilleurs Ouvriers de France and one is a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
