The crystal stemmed glass is one of the great classics of French tableware. Tradition at receptions suggests combining different types of glasses: crystal water glasses to accompany meals, and crystal wine glasses for each type of wine.

The bowl, stem and foot are designed separately and then assembled, using a technique that has been perfected over generations. Saint-Louis glasses become more delicate near the rim, like the glassblower's breath, which grows lighter at the end of the exhalation. Crystal wine glasses are essential for bringing out the aromas of red and white wines. Their shape and height influence the temperature and perception of flavours: a short stem makes for a warmer drink, while a long stem preserves the wine at a cooler temperature. Holding the glass by the stem or foot prevents contact with the bowl, ensuring that the wine is enjoyed at the correct temperature.

For enthusiasts of vintage wines, the delicacy of crystal allows for greater concentration of aromas and more controlled aeration. A mature wine, whose aromas have developed and become more complex over time, will be preserved by a glass with a rim that is narrower than the shoulder. Conversely, for a fruit wine – that is, a drink made from fruit other than grapes – it is best to choose a wider-rimmed glass to release the aromas.

Table setting follows a simple rule. The glasses are arranged from left to right and from largest to smallest. This means the water glass is placed before the wine glasses. This organisation reflects the art of hospitality and the tradition of table setting.
